42 Interesting Universe Facts

Our Universe is quite large and complex. There are many unknown facts of the Universe which are yet to be discovered. The Universe consists of the planets, galaxies, stars and all the forms of energy and matter. Our universe was created during the big bang. The end of the universe is unknown. Beyond our universe there are seas of galaxies.

42 Interesting Universe Facts

1. Scientists calculate that there are at least 100 billion galaxies in the observable Universe, each one brimming with stars. Our sun is one of at least 100 billion stars, just in the Milky Way. There are more stars than grains of sand on Earth's entire beach combined.

2. There is an exoplanet, which is completely covered in burning ice. It is 33 light years from us.

3. A day on Venus is longer than its year.

4. The stars we see in night sky are very far away from us. The star light takes a long time to travel across the space to reach our eyes. This means whenever we gaze at the stars, we are actually looking at how they looked in the past.

5. Sound cannot travel in space due to absence of atmosphere. So, astronaut's use radios to communicate in space.

6. All the stars, galaxies, and black hole in the Universe compose only 5% of its mass. The other 95% is unaccounted for. Scientist have coined the term "Dark Matter" for this matter. It is still unsure what or where it is.

7. The Milky Way is composed of so many stars that it would take 1,00,000 years at the speed of light to travel across it.

8. A day in Mercury lasts approximately as long as 59 days on Earth.

9. Black holes are formed when some very large stars collapse and condense all of their mass into a very small area known as the Schwarzschild radius. Each Schwarzchild radius is just below 9 mm and if it were to be compressed further our planet will become a black hole. For a person to become a black hole, they have to be compressed smaller than a proton.

10. It takes around 230 million years for our solar system to complete a single orbit around our Milky Way.

11. Astronauts brought back about 380 kg of "Moon Rock" from moon.

12. Almost, all of the mass in our solar system is composed by sun, leaving only 0.2% for all planets and everything else.

13. In 2004, scientists discovered the largest diamond ever. It's a collapsed star, measuring 4000 km across and having a core composed of 10 billion trillion trillion carats. It's approximately 50 light years from Earth. It is called BPM 37093 and also known as Lucy.

14. Researchers have found that there is water reservoir floating in space which is equivalent to 140 trillion mass of water found on Earth.

15. There is a giant cloud of alcohol in Sagittarius B.

16. Approximately 275 million new stars are born every day.

17. According to astronauts, the space smells like hot metal, welding fumes, and seared steak.

18. 90% of our body mass is star dust because all the elements are created in the stars, except hydrogen and helium.

19. According to researchers, the center of our galaxy tastes like raspberries and smells like rum.

20. Olympus Mons on Mars is the tallest mountain on any of the planets of the Solar System. It is 26 kilometers tall and spreads 600 kilometers across.

21. The international space station is about the size of a football field.

22. Everybody knows that it takes 8 minutes for the sunlight to reach Earth. But did you know? The energy in those rays started their life 30,000 years ago deep within the core of sun.

23. The brightest star in each constellation is called Alpha star, the next brightest Beta, and so on.

24. Though the birth and death of stars don't happen instantaneously, the process happens fairly frequently.

25. The red color of the Mars is due to the oxidizes (rusted) iron on its soil.

26. You can't cry on space because your tears won't ever fall.

27. Neutron stars are the fastest spinning objects known in the universe.

28. Earth has over 8,000 pieces of space junk orbiting around it.

29. Galileo was the first person to look into space with a telescope.

30. The core of a neutron star is very dense. It is so dense that if you take a spoonful of matter from its core, it would weigh 200 billion pounds.

31. There is a planet called HD189733b were it rains glass sideways.

32. There could be an infinite number of universes.

33. The largest moon in the Solar System is the Jupiter's moon called Ganymede.

34. Though Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System.

35. The human brain is the most complex object in the known Universe, with a billion neurons and quadrillion connections.

36. There is no center for Universe, as every galaxy is expanding away from one another.

37. When things are falling, their acceleration cancels out gravity, which is why astronauts in orbits are weightless.

38. Stars twinkle because we see them through the wafting of the atmosphere.

39. Astronauts say that moons dust smells like gunpowder and it is extremely soft.

40. R136a1 is the most luminous and massive star, which is 8.7 million times brighter than sun, it is present in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

41. The Universe began with the Big Bang.

42. The moon's gravity is 17% of the Earth's, so astronauts in space suits can jump 4 meter high on the moon.
