1. Andrew Waugh, a British Surveyor had tried to name this mountain but when he failed to get any good name, he just gave this mountain the name of the Surveyor General - George Everest.

2. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to climb Mount Everest. They reached the peak on 29 May, 1953.

3. The height of Mount Everest is 8,848m (29,029 feet) and it grows 4mm every year due to geologic uplift.

4. Although Mount Everest is the highest point on Earth from sea level, Mauna Kea, an inactive Hawaiian volcano, holds the record as the world's tallest mountain.
