The Colosseum is one of the new seven Wonders of the World. It
is also known as Flavian Amphitheatre. It is situated in the city of Rome,
Italy. It is the largest Amphitheatre ever built. The Colosseum got damaged due to the earth quakes. Let's read some interesting Colosseum.
1. The Colosseum was built around A.D. 70 to 80 by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian Dynasty on a former lake as a gift to the population of Rome. Colosseum wall height is 157 feet and the perimeter are1788 feet. It covers an area of approximately 6 acres. |

2. More or less 1.1 million tons of concrete was used in the construction of the Colosseum along with the bricks and stones. The Colosseum was built of travertine on the outside and the inside part was made up of tufa and brick, no mortar was used instead metal clamps were used to join them.
3. The Roman Colosseum has more than 80 entrance arches. It took 10 years for the complete construction of the Colosseum.
4. At any instance, the Colosseum could accommodate 50,000 to 80,000 people.
5. The Colosseum was used to host different events such as gladiator fights, religious ceremony, wild animal display, mock sea battles, dramas, executions and much more.

The gate from where the conquerors would exit was known as The Porta Triumphalis, the gate from where the defeated people who were spared of their life would exit was known as The Porta Sanavivaria and The Porta Libitina was the Gate of Death or Executions.
11. The fights between the gladiators were well organized. Gladiators included slaves, prisons of war, ex-soldiers, volunteers and criminals. The one on one fights between the gladiators were arranged according to their size, experience and skill level, record and fighting style.
12. A hefty earth quake destroyed the southern part of the Colosseum in the year 847.
