What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a neurological syndrome. There are three types of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. In June 2022, Justin Bieber was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome type 2.

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome type 1

This is also called as Ramsay Hunt Cerebellar. It is a rare type of cerebellar degeneration which consists tremor, myoclonic epilepsy, progressive ataxia and a dementing process.  

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome type 2

It is the reactivation of herpes zoster in the geniculate ganglion. Ramsay Hunt Syndrome type 2 includes a triad of ipsilateral facial paralysis, vesicles on the ear or in the ear and on the face and pain in the ear. It has variable presentation which may include vertigo, pain, deafness and a lower motor neuron lesion of the facial nerve. 

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome type 3 

It is also called artisan's palsy and Hunt's disease. It is an occupationally induced neuropathy of the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve.
